Sustainable Backyard Gardening Training
On Monday March 10th, 2025, SAEP in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands (MOAL) and The Grenada Food and Nutrition Council (GFNC) hosted a Sustainable Backyard Gardening Training which featured the construction and utilization of a Gutter A-Frame Planter for vegetables and the use of potting bag for growing sweet potatoes.
The Training was conducted in two sessions – a theoretical session where the aim of the training was to educate participants on the benefits and principles of backyard gardening, to provide them with information on the benefits of plant nutrition on their health and to promote the use of climate smart practices while gardening and a practical session on the construction of the Gutter A-Frame Planter.
The event was chaired by Mr Kenly Edwards CSA Coordinator for SAEP, and remarks were given by Mr Kingsley Thomas Senior Agriculture officer within the Ministry of Agriculture. The facilitator for the training was Ms Lydonna Mark Northern District Supervisor (Ag) and a presentation was made by Ms. Bettyann Francois of GFNC who highlighted the importance of proper nutrition to our bodies and the role plants play in a balanced diet.
There were over 50 participants who attended the training which included young mothers, backyard farmers and extension officers.
