Development of a monitoring programme and early warning system

A three-day workshop hosted by the Forestry Department wrapped up last week, focusing on the development of a monitoring programme and early warning system to detect changes in the ecological characteristics of the Levera Ramsar Site, due to climate change and other environmental threats.

Participants explored the critical services and functions that wetlands provide and identified major threats and vulnerabilities to the Ramsar-designated wetland.

These included development pressures, climate change, sea level rise, drought, flooding, resource harvesting (such as fish and game species), and pollution.

The workshop also included discussions on mitigation and adaptation strategies to safeguard the site’s ecological integrity.

Key areas highlighted were the need for increased site management, stronger public awareness and education initiatives, improved legislative and policy frameworks, as well as continuous monitoring and evaluation.

These actions are expected to contribute significantly to the sustainable management of the Levera Ramsar Site and its valuable resources.
