HON. PETER DAVID, FOREIGN MINISTER OF GRENADA RESPONSE TO PRESENTATION OF ANNUAL REPORT BY THE INTER-AMERICAN COUNCIL FOR INTEGRAL DEVELOPMENT (CIDI)
TO THE 49TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY
JUNE 27, 2019 – MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA

Mr. President, to Grenada, and I am positive for the wider region, integral development is central to the delivery of the equitable, prosperous, democratic and safe societies that our citizens demand.

The imperative to prioritize development work acknowledges that our region continues to lag behind others in poverty rates, inequality, competitiveness and educational outcomes.

Small island developing states in the region, like Grenada, further continue to grapple with existential threats such as the impact of man-made climate change, vulnerability to environmental and other exogenous shocks and evolving hurdles to accessing affordable development financing and financial inclusion in the wider global economy. Advancing the development agenda of the OAS and bolstering the support that the OAS provides for Member State developmental priorities is therefore fundamental to attaining the Sustainable Development Goals.

I wish to recognize and thank Grenada’s Ambassador, Yolande Smith, for her stewardship of the work of the Inter
American Council for Integral Development (CIDI) over the past 6 months and the strong results delivered by Executive
Secretary Osborne and the staff of SEDI. Our countries have benefited substantially from the work of CIDI and SEDI
in the areas of human, sustainable and economic development over the years.

We realize, however, that there is even more that can be achieved through greater cooperation on the part of Member States, there is much that we can learn from each other in order to accelerate our own growth and competitiveness. The OAS is the ideal avenue to achieve this.

In this regard, I want to encourage colleagues to commit to reprioritizing engagement with the development work of the
Organization in the coming year. While we are encouraged by the Secretariat’s efforts to utilize partnerships to help
execute Member State mandates, we also have a responsibility to ensure that the development work of the OAS is adequately resourced.

In Grenada, you will find a cooperative partner as we continue to work towards transformational development in our
countries with the support of the OAS.
