August 2, 2019 – Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell, has commended officers of the Traffic Department of the Royal Grenada Police Force for the Happy Faces initiative.

Launched in late July, the humanitarian initiative spearheaded by Woman Police Constable Daniella Thomas, targeted less fortunate persons in the town of St. George, providing them with food, personal care packages, health care checks and personal grooming services.

In a brief meeting with some of the participating officers this week, Dr. Mitchell commended them for the demonstration of empathy towards fellow citizens.

He said, “Sometimes we forget the less fortunate. We often blame them for things without having an understanding of how they got there.
We do not know where we will end up, therefore it is important to show empathy and do something to lift them up.”

Dr. Mitchell was out of state when the initiative was launched but said he heard very positive reviews.

He underscored the potential impact of this on community policing. He said, “Such an initiative goes a long way in improving the image of the police force.

Oftentimes, people only see the hard side of policing when you enforce the law.

Through this initiative you have made the softer side visible, demonstrating that police officers are concerned about their fellow human citizens.”

Officer in Charge of the Traffic Department of the RGPF, Superintendent Randy Connaught has also commended the officers and the many stakeholders who contributed to the success of the humanitarian venture. Several Government ministries and departments, members of the business community, other officers of the RGPF and some private citizens were identified as contributors.

Twenty-five homeless and mentally challenged persons benefited from the Happy Faces Project.

It is anticipated that the initiative will be taken to other parishes and to Carriacou.
