Bret moves away from Grenada

NADMA, St. George’s, Grenada – Monday, June 19, 2017: The National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) continues to monitor the weather with the technical assistance of the Meteorological Office at the Maurice Bishop International Airport.

At 800 PM AST (0000 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Bret was located near latitude 9.5 North, longitude 60.5 West or about 195 MI...315 KM SSE OF GRENADA

Bret is moving toward the west-northwest near 25 mph (40 km/h) and is expected to slow down over the next 48 hours.  On the forecast track, the Center of the tropical storm is expected to move near or over Trinidad and the eastern coast of Venezuela tonight and early Tuesday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next 12 to 24 hours. A weakening trend is forecast to begin on Wednesday and Bret is expected to become a tropical depression, by then it would have already passed the state of Grenada.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles (130 km) from the center.
Please note that Grenada is still under Tropical Storm Warning and a Marine Advisory is still in effect.

The National Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) was activated from 8 p.m Monday. Also two shelters in the south of the island: the Calliste Government School and Maranatha Seventh Day Adventist Church (Ground Floor) Morne Tout, have been opened.
NaDMA takes this opportunity to remind us all that we should continue to be prepared at all times for all emergencies. Persons to the south of the island and those living in flood prone areas are asked to be especially vigilant.

The Agency in collaboration with the Meteorological Services will continue to monitor this Tropical Warning and will continue update the public as necessary.
