Prime Minister Mitchell Participates in "A Blue Commonwealth"High-Level Discussion at UN

ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, June 7, 2017 – GIS: The Commonwealth is fully embracing the “blue economy,” with a new initiative called “A Blue Commonwealth,” and sought Grenada’s support, touting Grenada’s initiative toward the development of a Blue Innovation Institution.

Prime Minister Dr. the Right Honourable Keith C. Mitchell served as a featured speaker on the panel of a high-level “Blue Commonwealth” side event held on June 6th, during the United Nations Ocean Conference.

Prime Minister Mitchell highlighted, among other matters, the urgent need for capacity building in today’s growth industries for small islands, such as coastal tourism, marina dive tourism, marina services, and fisheries management.

He also reiterated Grenada’s call for new innovations and technologies in eco-system management, aquaculture, biotechnology and ocean energy.

The Commonwealth Side event was co-chaired by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Baroness Patricia Scotland and Vice President Vincent Meriton of the Republic of Seychelles.
