ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, JULY 21, 2016 – GIS: The Ministry of Health will spearhead a pre-carnival clean-up campaign in selected communities as the country continues to take measures that can prevent the outbreak and spread of vector-borne diseases.

The move, which will focus mainly on the removal of mosquito breeding containers/sources, health officials say, is the forerunner to the national clean-up campaign carded for the post carnival season.

The cleanup drive which will be held from 8am to 12: noon on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24, July, 2016, will be held in the following communities;

ST. GEORGE’S: Woodlands, Morne Toute, Morne Rouge, Belmont and Lagoon road.

ST. JOHN’S: Gun-battle area and the big drain in (Barbados) by the health center.

ST. ANDREW’S: the Sea Port, Grenville Bus Terminus, the Car park and surrounding areas.

The (MOH) is urging members of the above listed communities to participate in this venture by removing all necessary items that may hold water and give rise to the breeding of the aedes aegypti mosquito that carries dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and zika viruses.

To ensure that the clean-up goes according to plan, individuals are asked to separate their waste and place them into bags e.g.; household waste, old tires/tins and white goods for collection.

Bags, gloves, gloves, rakes, spades and other equipment necessary for the exercise will be provided at various communities by selected coordinators.

As Grenada prepares to welcome thousands of visitors for the festive season, health officials say every citizen must play their role in emancipating themselves from the scourge of the aedes aegypti mosquito by ensuring that their environment is cleaned.
