Grenada’s Drug Control Officer Trained as Hemispheric Trainer for the Universal Prevention Curriculum for Substance Abuse

ST. GEORGE, GRENADA, May 20, 2015 – GIS: Dave Alexander, Drug Control officer with the Drug Control Secretariat in Grenada, is now one of 18 professionals trained as Hemispheric trainers for the Universal Prevention Curriculum (UPC) for Substance Abuse.

The training of Mr. Alexander provides Grenada with the technical expertise to implement on-island, evidence-based drug prevention initiatives training programs.

Such training would expand and enhance the cadre of trained personnel needed, to implement related programmes, which are geared toward drug demand reduction.
The training was conducted in Miami, United States, from April 27 to May 7, and was sponsored by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), of the United States Department of State.

The Universal Prevention Curriculum (UPC) for Substance Abuse is a series of training curricula developed for the training and credentialing of addiction professionals. The overall goal of the training series is to reduce the significant health, social, and economic problems associated with substance use disorders, by building international prevention capacity through training, professionalizing, and expanding the global treatment workforce.

During the next twelve months, participants would pursue a 288-hour training programme in nine curricula. The curriculum would focus on the design, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based practices in the area of substance use prevention evidence-based drug prevention programs. Participants would examine social, learning, and drug prevention theories, which would provide them with appropriate knowledge, and skills in the design of evidence-based drug prevention initiatives.

The UPC is a collaborative initiative among the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD/OAS), the Colombo Plan International Center for Certification and Education (ICCE), and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), with funding from the INL.
