ST. GEORGE, GRENADA, March 6, 2015- GIS: The Government of Grenada aims to establish a professional Teaching Service which will be in line with global standards. This is to ensure that quality education is delivered to the nation’s children.

The vision of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development stipulates “a well-managed educational system that promotes the principles of morality, equity, relevancy, accountability and lifelong learning opportunities that will produce an educated and skilled citizenry, who are capable of making a meaningful contribution to society.”

Key priorities for the ministry include the modernization of processes to facilitate the delivery of contemporary educational services; improvement of the quality of education by strengthening teacher capacity; enhancing school leadership and management and implementing a relevant curriculum at all levels.

In an effort to support the implementation of the above, it is imperative that the current teaching staff be regularized, through a process of permanent appointments within the service.

The large number of temporary teachers appointed on one-year terms and “until further notice”, within the Teaching Service has given rise to concerns, not only by the Government, but by the Grenada Union of Teachers and the general public.

The following criteria will be utilized when selecting for permanent positions:

1. Qualification
2. Length of Service
3. Performance
4. Passion for Teaching

The Cabinet-appointed Selection Committee will convene its first meeting on March 9, 2015.

The Chief Education Officer (Ag), Mr. Elvis Morain anticipates that the process should begin immediately and some temporary teachers may become eligible for permanent appointments, well before the new school year.
