St. George’s, Grenada – 22nd June, 2015 -“Operation Ready” a two-day exercise planned and executed by the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) Grenada takes place this week June 25 – 26, 2015.

The main purpose of the Exercise is to test Grenada’s preparedness and capacity to cope with and respond to the effects of hazards, in this case hurricanes and Mass Casualty Incidents.

The exercise will also allow for the testing of several aspects of the National Disaster Plan including: the Hurricane, Mass Casualty Management and Shelter Management Plans; the Incident Command System; Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) Management; and the District EOCs Operation.

Operation Ready 2015 includes multiple hazards. On day one June 25, Grenada and its dependencies, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, will be affected by a hurricane with flash flooding, and landslides.

On the morning of Day 2, a severe traffic accident will occur in the Grand Anse area. On the afternoon of Day 2, there will be an aircraft accident in the St. Andrew area.

Grenada, like most Caribbean countries remains vulnerable to several hazards such as hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and others. Climate change and unstable economies make the islands of the Caribbean even more vulnerable to these hazards.

Continuous testing of plans is one way for the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) to engage its partners as the agency strives to build resilience and maintain a culture of safety.

The cooperation of stakeholders and the general public is greatly appreciated
