ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA, July 24, 2015 - GIS: Prime Minister and Minister for Disaster Management, Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell, has conducted a series of extensive briefings following the alert that was recently put out by the Seismic Research Unit of the University of the West Indies regarding activities at the Kick 'em Jenny volcano.

Prime Minister Mitchell who is this week in Europe, considered returning home immediately, but Disaster Management officials advised him that it was not necessary because there was no need to declare a state of national emergency.

The Grenadian leader held comprehensive briefing sessions with Disaster Management officials as well as senior members of his cabinet, including Acting Prime Minister, Honorable Elvin Nimrod, during the day Thursday.

Dr. Mitchell said he is reassured and satisfied that no one has to change normal life routines despite the increased underwater activity of the volcano, since it has been determined that those activities pose no immediate threat to people on the coastal areas.

However as a precautionary measure, the Prime Minister has elevated discussions within the last 24 hours with regional and international institutions, agencies and governments about the need for ongoing technical and other assistance for disaster mitigation efforts in Grenada.

The Prime Minister, who is due to return to the State next week, stands ready to adjust his schedule if ever the need arises.

Additionally, the Minister for Disaster Management also wants everyone to pay attention to the advisories and information given by the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA), and to be mindful of the credibility of the sources of information out there.
