ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, JULY 16, 2015 – GIS: The Ministry of Health has declared the period July 12th to August 15th Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Prevention Month - 2015.

The overall goal of S.T.I Prevtnion Month is to create greater awareness about its impact and effect on human life and our Country; while at the same time implementing measures that can result in a reduction in the number of reported STI cases thereby creating a safer environment for future generations.

The month is being observed under the theme: “Preventing STIs: Preserving Lives”, and health officials are encouraging individuals who are sexually active to take steps to avoid becoming infected.

(S.T.I Prevention MONTH-2015), was conceptualized as a strategy to address (STI) related public health issue/challenges. Reports are that in recent years the number of (STI) cases has risen steadily.

Despite the many campaigns and the amount of information given to the public more and more people are becoming infected, explained a health promotion officer.

Health officials say this has serious implications for general and reproductive health and thus weakens the very core of our existence.

The Ministry of Health confirmed that while Gonorrhea and Syphilis to the list, they are also concerned about Herpes, HIV and Hepatitis-B.

Meanwhile health officials told the Government Information Service (GIS) they are disquiet about the number of infants that are being born with STIs.
