ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, 08 October, 2014:
Over thirty Imani participants of the third batch will be graduating on Thursday, October 9, 2014, after completing a Media/ Journalism training.

The training, which commenced on Monday, September 22nd forms part of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs’ approach towards adequately preparing the trainees for their ‘on-the-job training’.

The participants received training in areas such as: The Interview process, The Law and Media, the Electronics Crime Bill, Camera Operations, News Writing and Reporting and Ethics.

The trainees were also given the opportunity to get the exposure of being in various media houses to observe their day-to-day operations and also to be present at Government press briefings.

Local Freelance Print Journalist, Linda Straker, is the facilitator.

Straker said there is tremendous potential in each trainee.
She challenged the participants to remain focused, keep abreast with the current affairs of their country and to be balanced in their news reporting.

She expressed hope that once their skills are well-developed, great things are in store for the media in Grenada.

The trainees were eager to speak about the three-week training program.

According to Akim Mc Sween, it is important to note the significance of the Media.

To him, being a young aspiring Journalist is the greatest asset for journalism in Grenada. According to him “As we know right now, news and newspapers aren’t really read by the young people; so if we have younger people with more innovation; to put a little bit more creativity to it, it will help people to read more and listen to news”.

Meanwhile, Nikita Mc Vean is confident that after weeks of writing news stories and doing research, she will be a force to be reckoned with in the field of news reporting.

On Thursday, fifty trainees including participants in a Small Business training, conducted by the Ministry of Youth, Sports & Religious Affairs, which included seven (7) youth from the Market Access & Rural Enterprise Project (MAREP), will be awarded certificates of completion. The graduation ceremony will be held at the Grenada National Stadium at 3 p.m.
