Grenada concludes swimming campaign at 2014 CAC Games

ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, 24th November, 2014 – Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Religious Affairs:            Grenada concluded its swimming campaign through Shawn Gabriel and Gabrielle Paparo at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games underway in Veracruz, Mexico.

Both swimmers made their international debut at the Leyes de Reforma Aquatic Centre.

Shawn Gabriel, 17, qualified to compete in the men’s 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle. At the venue, Gabriel finished 5th (30.23s) in heat 1 of the 50m butterfly on Monday (17 November); his time was not enough to put him through to the A final in hopes of medaling. He went on to clock 30.16s, 1.03s faster than his qualifying time, to finish 7th in the B final on Tuesday (18 November).

In his other race, the men’s 50m freestyle, he finished 6th (28.34s) in heat 2 and 8th (28.73s) in the B final.

The other Grenadian swimmer, Gabrielle Paparo competed in the women’s 100m butterfly on Tuesday (18 November). She finished 11th overall – 6th in heat 2 in 1:24.35 and 3rd in the B final in 1:20.85.

The 15-year-old began her medal quest in the women’s 200m freestyle on Sunday (16 November). She ended 7th in heat 2 (2:33.37); Paparo’s time did not earn her a spot in the A final. However, she did not compete in the B final of the women’s 200m freestyle.

Team Grenada will continue its quest this week in hopes of medaling in the 2014 CAC Games. This is Grenada’s 7th time participating in the history of the Games since making its first appearance in 1982.

The 2014 Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games features over 5,700 athletes from 31 countries competing in 36 sports. The competition concludes on Sunday, 30 November.
