ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, May 19, 204 – GIS: Prime Minister Dr the Rt. Hon Keith Mitchell assured the nation that a serious Housing Program will soon be introduced to lift the standard of housing in the country.

PM Mitchell told the, more than 200, residents of St. John, at the Constituency Forum, that he is very much aware of the widespread problem in the country and that government is stepping-in to address the situation.

Dr. Mitchell said that his administration has been working diligently to stabilize the country after inheriting a nightmare from the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration of former Prime Minister Tillman Thomas.

Money for the Housing Project is coming from the Home Grown Program of Structural Adjustments and Fiscal Reforms. The Grenada leader says that the International Community is impressed with the program and will be providing tangible support.

A confident Dr Mitchell told the forum, including those following the session via Television, that Grenada is expecting at least US$300 million – US$100 million a year over the next three years. He indicated that some of the funds would go towards the Housing Program. A bit of the resources will go towards repair for houses in the constituencies and a program to build, repair and renovate homes by giving soft loans.

Dr Mitchell wants to see the establishment of Construction Brigades in the various constituencies to expedite the process, which he says will be cost effective.

“The plan of action is to have these Construction Brigades in the constituencies, not from outside; so you will determine who they are”, the Prime Minister said, pointing out that the workmen will be paid for their service. “We will be investing quite a lot of money in the Housing Program”, Dr Mitchell assured.
