ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, March 24, 2014 – GIS: About a dozen young people from the New Life Organization (NEWLO), and a number of other residents from the area, will now find employment at the newly opened Diamond Chocolate Factory in St. Mark’s.

In his remarks to the audience, Prime Minister, Dr. The Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, who cut the ribbon to officially declare the Factory open, hailed the initiative as “evidence that when we change the way we practice agriculture, and invest in value-added products, agriculture can indeed be a more viable and attractive occupation for young people.”

The Prime Minister further noted that the Factory, a project long in the making, is the latest in a line of recent initiatives geared toward boosting economic activity in the nation, and restoring hope, especially to our young people.

Also addressing the audience at the launch was Minister of Agriculture, Honourable Roland Bhola, who congratulated the Grenada Cocoa Association and the other donors who made the opening of the Factory possible. The Minister sees the factory as a sign that we are changing the way we do agriculture by creating more avenues of revenue for our farmers.

MP for St. Mark’s, and Minister of Health, Honourable Dr. Clarice Modeste noted that the new Factory is testament that the economy of her Constituency is on the rise. She amusingly warned that the parish of St. Mark’s is on its way to overtaking St. Andrew’s and becoming the “Bread Basket” of the nation.

The Diamond Chocolate Factory, made possible through the joint partnership of L.A. Burdick Chocolate LLC, the Grenada Cocoa Association, USAID and the Government of Grenada, has been a project years in the making, transcending governments.
