ST.GEORGE’S, GRENADA, March 14, 2014- GIS: The town of Victoria, St. Mark will come alive on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, with several activities put together by the Ministry of Social Development and Housing, to commemorate World Social Work Day, which will this year be celebrated under the theme “Social and Economic Crises - Social Work Solutions”.

World Social Work Day is the brainchild of the International Federation of Social Work (IFSW), which sees the day as an annual opportunity to celebrate the contribution that social work has made to societies around the world.

Among the activities planned for that day are; a Health Fair at the Alston George Park; a Walk-about the Town of Victoria and surrounding communities; visits to the elderly and child-care facilities in St. Mark; health and fitness activities; and information booths.

“What we want to do is change the public’s perception of social work and social services, so that persons can see social workers as agents of change and not necessarily persons who intervene only in domestic and societal issues.

We want them to know that social work is just as much preventative as it is corrective,” Chief Social Development Officer, Yvonne DaBreo, told the GIS.

A key part of the day’s event will be a Public Forum on pertinent societal issues at the Bonair Government School.

“We have a panel of about 5 or more persons who will be making various presentations on social issues, so we are hoping that persons will come with their questions and concerns,” Mrs. DaBreo said.

The Social Development Officer said that the activity could be considered as the ‘opener’ for the various community outreach programmes the Ministry plans to launch in the future.

The Ministry’s observation of World Social Work Day is being hosted with kind sponsorship from the National Lotteries Authority (NLA), Budget Marine, the Marketing and National Importing Board (MNIB), Mr. Dwayne Gill aka DJ ‘Danny D’ and De Graps Restaurant.

Mrs. DaBreo said that it is the Ministry’s intention to host the celebrations in different parishes around the nation on an annual basis.

Additionally, on March 18, 2014, the Grenada Association of Professional Social Workers will host a conference entitled ‘Facilitating Caring Communities’ at the National Stadium from 10:00 a.m.
