Tuesday June 10, 2014, St. George’s Grenada – Unlike previous visits, to the St. Mark Flood Mitigation Project, this visit was critically important in that it was the last tour of the completed project; before Government signs off and issues the certificate of completion to china Harbour Engineering Company; the company charged with the execution of the project.
According to Mr. Teng Xingcheng, chief project Engineer “While China Harbour has completed the project well ahead of scheduled; an official claim to early completion can only be made, when the certificate of completion is issued by the Ministry of Works”.

Last Wednesday a team of engineers and other personnel; led by the Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of Works, Mr. Winston Gabriel, toured the entire 900 meters of the project. While the CTO identified a few areas requiring some minor adjustments; specifically related to drainage of waste water into the river from residences, overall he expressed great satisfaction with the work done by China Harbour.

Following this visit, the CTO, is expected to put in writing his findings and make final recommendations for any adjustments to be made. According to Mr. Teng Xingcheng, chief project Engineer, “China Harbour will act quickly to complete the minor adjustments within a matter of days, as it is our wish, to receive the certificate of completion, well ahead of schedule.

“There may just be an opportunity for the people of St. Mark to capitalize on, in the area of tourism” said Ms. Janis Lessey-Cuffie, PR Manager for China Harbour Engineering Company. She said that the river has been expanded and graded and the banks now presents a comfortable walkway for persons to easily access parts of the river, that otherwise would have been difficult to access.

According to Ms. Cuffie, swimming basins have been dug out for the residences to enjoy; steps to access the river have been laid down and even stones placed strategically for persons to continue to wash and do the things they are used to doing in the river.

“The river is now so attractive and accessible, that I can foresee it becoming an attraction, not only for St. Mark’s residents but for people throughout Grenada and beyond” said Ms. Lessey-Cuffie.

A massive handing-over ceremony is being planned by China Harbour Engineering Company and will include food, drinks, entertainment and even fireworks. Further, as a goodwill gesture to the people of St. Mark, by China Harbour, a new Basketball court will also be handed over, at that closing ceremony.
