Government committed to Grenada’s Marine Protected Areas

ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA, July 29, 2014 – GIS: Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment visited the Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Woburn, Clarkes Court Bay, on Thursday, July 24th. The purpose of the visit was to become better acquainted with the MPA and discuss the various activities planned for the area.

The stakeholders of the National MPA Management Committee welcomed the visit from Minister for Agriculture, Hon. Roland Bhola, and Permanent Secretary for Forestry and Fisheries, Mrs. Marilyn Austin-Cadore.

This was the first meeting between the Minister for Agriculture, Hon. Roland Bhola and the National MPA Management Committee, which has legal responsibility for the management of all the MPA’s in Grenada..

Minister Bhola was pleased with this initial meeting and said that he plans to meet with the National MPA Committee on a regular basis.

The Woburn, Clarkes Court Bay, MPA is one of two demonstration sites in the Eastern Caribbean receiving support from the Sustainable Financing & Management of Eastern Caribbean Marine Ecosystem Project.

During the meeting, National MPA Coordinator, Roland Baldeo, outlined the main activities planned for the MPA, such as:

  • Construction of an office;
  • Procurement of a new boat;
  • Equipping the Rangers;
  • Zoning plan for the area;
  • Water Quality Monitoring Programme;
  • Signage: Demarking the area;
  • Public awareness;
  • and Livelihood opportunities.
The Fisheries Division is determined to strengthen the protection of our most precious marine assets.

A coordinator for the Woburn Clark's court Bay MPA will be appointed from September 1, 2014 under the Sustainable Financing and Management of the Eastern Caribbean Marine Ecosystems project.
