Contract for phase 2 of the General Hospital Project Signed

ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA, FRIDAY, 25 JULY, 2014 - GIS _ The Ministry of Health earlier today signed contract documents for the commencement of construction of Phase 2 of the General Hospital Project.

The official signing of documents took place at the Office of the Minister for Health and Social Security, in the Ministerial complex, St. George’s.

Prior to signing the documents Minister for Health Dr. Clarice Modeste-Curwen told reporters and staff that having reviewed the project, listening to the concerns and lengthy discussions, it was felt that infrastructural works at the general hospital was needed.

“This does not in any way take away from our commitment to a new hospital”, Dr. Modeste told the audience who witnessed the signing.

“The previous Government had started work on the concept and we believe that it was a justified move to make. Of course the cost was phenomenal (a number of millions) and our hesitation coming into office was that the plan was based on a loan agreement and because the nation is all concerned about the public debt we felt that with the state of the economy it was not the best thing to go into at this time,” explained the Grenadian Health Minister.

However Dr. Modeste said that a new hospital is very much on Government’s agenda and that they are looking for alternative financing. She said the Ministry of Finance has also held discussions with several entities that are interested in a public private partnership for a new hospital.

Works Minister Hon. Gregory Bowen who signed on behalf of his Ministry which oversees all Government capital projects in a brief summary of the project said phase 2 is divided into two components.

Component one consists of the building, infrastructure with respect to the steel frames, where as the second component will consist of the eye ward, Obstetrics-Gynecology as well as Accident and Emergencies, Laboratory and Imaging, etc.

With the redesigning of the facility completed the Grenadian Works Minister said component one of phase 2 will cost US250,000.00 - while component 2 will cost US1.03M.

Meanwhile Mr. Golzales told reporters that refurbishment work on the Eye ward is expected to take up to five months, after which work on the new wing of the hospital project will begin.

He added that with favorable weather conditions the project is likely to take eighteen to twenty four months. The project is being funded by the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela and is expected to commence around mid August.
