ST. GEORGE'S, GRENADA, Friday, January 27, 2014 - GIS: _ A major fogging campaign will be launched on Monday, January 27, 2014, by the Ministry of Health as it sets the stage for next weekend’s national cleanup campaign.

The fogging exercise is the forerunner to the island-wide cleanup code named “Operation Clean Sweep”. The objectives are to reduce the mosquito population, reduce mosquito breeding sites and create healthier and safer environmental conditions for citizens.

The Ministry’s Acting Chief Environmental Health Officer (CEHO) - Francis Balwant said the fogging campaign will be conducted in every parish.

Balwant told the Government Information Services (GIS) that the Winsborrow Brothers who operates a private fogging business has joined forces with the Ministry to undertake the exercise.

The senior Environmental Health Inspector said the fogging campaign will kick off in the South of the island moving in an Easterly direction.

However Balwant said in order for the exercise to be effective there must be public co-operation and appealed for members of the public to allow the foggers to carry out their work.

He said it is also important for homeowners to open up their home to allow the fog to enter and kill the mosquitoes. He further asked homeowners to get rid of potential mosquito breeding sites and to clean their immediate surroundings.

A list with over twenty illegal dumping sites was presented to the Chief Medical Officer - Dr. George Mitchell who indicated that immediate steps will be taken to address these illegal dumping "Hot Spots", to curb the problem which has far reaching negative health and economic impacts.
