ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, Friday, January 10, 2014: The Physical Planning Unit (PPU) of the Ministry of Works is embarking on a drive to sensitize the public on physical planning matters.

The Unit plans to have more media presence focusing on issues such as land use and development control.

To start the process, officials from the PPU will make appearances on the Government Information Service’s morning programme, Spice Morning, and the Grenada Broadcasting Network’s morning programme, Beyond the Headlines, on Monday.

In addition the Unit is working on finding creative ways to further sensitize the public.

Senior Planning Officer, Fabian Purcell, says this education drive is aimed at increasing compliance with planning regulations.

Mr. Purcell said the unit hopes to achieve the following:

· Increase the resilience of Grenada’s built environment to natural disasters
· Formalize the construction industry
· Preserve and conserve the natural and cultural heritage of Grenada and its sister islands (Carriacou and Petite Martinique)
· Prepare for increased activity in the construction sector
· Implement a Planning and Information Management System, facilitating information sharing among key stakeholders

Mr. Purcell said the planning unit saw an increase in the number of building applications last year and has recorded over 500 approvals up to December 31, 2013.
