Beausejour, Carriacou, February 19, 2014- Officials here are reporting positive growth in a steel pan tutoring program targeting students, and are promising that soon an orchestra from Carriacou and Petite Martinique will be competing against big Grenada bands like New Dimensions and Angel Harps.

Pan tutor Leroy Sylvester says the program, introduced to the primary schools in 2009 by the Division of Culture in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, is reaping success.

The program has expanded to now include students from the Carriacou's two secondary schools, Bishop’s College and Hillsborough Secondary.

Practice sessions are held Monday to Friday at the Hillsborough Community Centre, with the support of the Division of Culture.

Mr. Sylvester foresees further growth of the steel pan initiative but says it would require additional backing.

In this connection, he is appealing for more parental and community support for the pan tutoring program and has embarked on a public outreach campaign.

One of the outcomes of the campaign was a recent donation of T-shirt to the steel orchestra from corporate citizen Hotel Laurena, which is owned by George and Janice Andrew.

According to Mr. Sylvester, the plan is for the steelband to be able to perform not only at school fairs and sporting and cultural events in Carriacou and Petite Martinique, but also at the National Panorama at Grenada's carnival in August.

The pans used in the program were purchased from Trinidad with funds secured from the Grenada Electricity Company (GRENLEC) through the Office of Local Government in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs in 2012.
