ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, August 28, 2014 – GIS: Prime Minister Dr. The Right Honourable Keith Mitchell leaves Grenada, Friday, August 29, to attend the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), held from September 1st-4th, in Apia, Samoa.

The Conference is a special initiative by the United Nations, to focus the world’s attention on small countries and their need to be sustainably developed in light of the many vulnerabilities with which they are confronted, such as climate change.

The theme for this year’s forum is "The sustainable development of Small Island Developing States through genuine and durable partnerships."

According to the UN, the major objectives of the multi-stakeholder dialogues and plenary sessions are to assess progress of small islands in implementing measures to ensure their resilience; and to reaffirm political commitment through practical actions for continued implementation of measures.

Coming out of their conference, the intention is to identify priorities for the sustainable development of SIDS to be considered in the post-2015 UN development agenda.

Given Grenada’s lead role in climate change adaptation strategies, Prime Minister Mitchell has been called on to make a number of interventions while in Apia.

On the delegation to Samoa are other key stakeholders who will be participating in varied discussions during the conference, including Grenada’s Ambassador to the United States and expert on sustainable development, Dr. Angus Friday; Permanent Representative to the United Nations in NY, Ambassador Denis Antoine, and Ms. Yolande Newton, from the Economic Affairs Division from the Ministry of Finance, with responsibility for projects.

The Prime Minister returns to Grenada on Sunday, September 7th.
