ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, August 23, 2014 – GIS: As the Ministry of Social Development and Housing continues to observe the 25th day of each month as “Gender-based Violence Awareness Day” or “Orange Day”, another call is being sounded to wear something orange on Monday, August 25th, in support of ending violence against women and girls.

For the Month of August, the Division of Gender and Family Affairs will focus on Violence Against the Girl Child, as girls play multiple roles in the household, society and economy; but are often victims of discrimination from the earliest stages of life.

In Grenada, one of the most prevalent cases of violence against the girl child is sexual abuse, which includes sexual contact that abuses, humiliates, degrades or violates the sexual integrity of a person. This act involves rape, sexual intercourse with a minor, sexual assault and incest.

Both adults and peers in all social spaces, both public and private, perpetrate violence against girls. This often tends to have immediate and long term consequences and creates additional obstacles to girls’ progress.

To further raise awareness, the Division is also inviting persons to take part in the “Orange Selfie Campaign”, where persons are encouraged to take a ‘selfie’ (picture of themselves) on August 25 wearing something orange and post it to their Facebook, Instagram and/or Twitter pages with the hash tag: #orangeday #EndVAW.

More about Orange Day
The recognition of the 25th of every month as Orange Day was declared by the Secretary-General’s “UNiTE to End Violence against Women Campaign” in July 2012.

Initiated and led bythe UNiTE Campaign’s Global Youth Network, worldwide activities are implemented on this day by UN Country Offices and civil society organizations, as they strive to highlight issues relevant to preventing and ending violence against women and girls, not only once a year, on November 25 - International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women - but every month.
