ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, April 11, 2014 – GIS:
The Prime Minister of Grenada, Dr. The Right Honourable Keith Mitchell, expressed his satisfaction with the meetings held yesterday and today with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

"The support has been tremendous and the high praise for Grenada's approach in building a Homegrown Program for structural adjustment and fiscal sustainability, with the engagement of the social partners, has been very encouraging," PM Mitchell said.

The Prime Minister had meetings with Executive Directors and Senior Management of the IMF who expressed strong support for the approach of engaging the unions, churches and civil society in reaching consensus for managing Grenada's debt restructuring.

IMF Directors were encouraged by the initiative of the Grenada Government and the people of Grenada to take the difficult but necessary measures in order to attract the support of the World Bank and the IMF.

They acknowledged that this was a critical step to ensure not only support and investment from their institutions but would also pave the way for further investment from the international community.

IMF officials took note of the steps taken by the Government to strengthen revenue collection.

They also noted that, with the courageous but necessary sacrifices of the Grenadian people and social partners, combined with the leadership of the Prime Minister, Grenada's restructuring has the potential to be a success story.
