S St. George's, Monday, September 5, 2011: Six Grenadians will spend a week in India studying the operations of the nutmeg sector there.

The study tour has been organized by the International Trade Centre (ITC) as part of its support for the Grenada Nutmeg Sector Development Strategy.

During the tour, which runs from September 10 - 17, members of the delegation will interface with primary players in India's nutmeg industry to get a better understanding of developments related to processing, propagation and value added initiatives.

The delegation's schedule in Cochin, India, includes visits to selected nutmeg plantations established with high-yielding plants and improved drying facilities; and to specific grafting facilities that would be applicable to Grenada.

They'll also tour plants that make value-added products like nutmeg and mace oil and oleoresin; organic spices' factories that export nutmeg and mace to Europe and the United States; and visit quality-testing laboratories to hold discussions on quality assurance in nutmeg and mace.

Participants will also hold discussions on machinery and equipment used for processing spices and get to opportunity to establish contacts with suppliers.
