ST.GEORGE'S, GRENADA, JUNE 6, 2011_ Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas this morning met with Mr. Haji Asghar, a philanthropist and foreign investor, who is the Production Director of New York's Finest Bagels, a New York restaurant franchise with three outlets in Grenada.

Consistent with the Prime Minister Thomas' commitment to finding ways to develop Grenada's essential institutions and his efforts to promote more joint private - public sector cooperation aimed at advancing the common good of our citizens, the Prime Minister hosted the meeting to express his administration's facilitative support for Mr. Asghar's initiatives.

These include the renovation and upgrade of the Grand Anse Sports Complex to provide improved facilities for our youth to undertake constructive recreational activities and the procurement of equipment designed to strengthen the capacity of the Royal Grenada Police Force to ensure public safety.

The Police were presented with two vehicles and 10 sirens and emergency lights for their vehicles.

The Prime Minister, who is also the Minister for National Security, used the meeting to convey the gratitude of the Grenadian people to Mr. Asghar for his efforts in funding the police equipment support and recreational projects.

The police support project is currently being carried out with the engagement of Hon. Glynis Roberts, MP for St. George South, in collaboration with the RGPF, working closely with Commissioner of Police, James Clarkson and ASP Rholda Bridgeman, who is responsible for the South St. George Police Station.

In addition to assisting with the upgrading and renovating of the sporting facilities in Grand Anse, Mr. Asghar is also sponsoring the first annual New York's Finest Bagels Tennis Championship, to be held on the Grand Anse Sports Complex in December of this year.

The nation's youth would be vying for up to EC$6,000 in cash prizes to be divided among the top three winners.

Affirming the concern of Prime Minister Thomas, Mr. Asghar expressed the belief that "having a well-equipped police department, would lead to a safer community for all residents, business owners and tourists."

"My administration will continue to do everything in its power to ensure that we facilitate all well-intentioned, generous, constructive efforts toward nation building.

Mr. Haji Asghar is not only a successful investor, but also a corporate benefactor and organizer, assisting our local community," the Prime Minister said.

The meeting was also attended by Aide to the Prime Minister Gerry Hopkin and Security Coordinator in the Prime Minister's Office, Nigel Noel. Mr. Asghar is also an instructor of Business Management at St. George's University.
