St. George’s, August 29, 2011 – Grenada Carnival Committee officials, who have expressed satisfaction with the overall success of Spicemas 2011, is looking forward to the GCC’s next event. It will be the hosting of a grand prize-giving ceremony for winners of GCC-sponsored carnival activities.

“The awards’ presentation is an important part of carnival. Because of its importance, we want to do it at a time when all, or most, of the top performing artistes are in Grenada,’’ said GCC Chairman Colin Dowe.

Since Spicemas ended on August 9, many artistes – including Soca Monarch Terror Kid and Lucozade Road March King Lavaman – have journeyed overseas, including to New York, whose Labour Day carnival celebrations will climax on Monday, September 5.

“We are strategically scheduling the prize-giving for around the third week of September, after the Labour Day celebrations, since several of our premiere performers are now travelling,’’ Dowe said.

Senator Arley Gill, the Minister with responsibility for Culture, said that with novelties such as the establishing of Carnival City at Fort Matthew; the staging of the Traditional Mas’ Exposition and Competition in St. Mark; and the hosting of the Inter-Col Soca Monarch Competition; the GCC had “demonstrated boldness in its attempts to propel Grenada’s carnival to a new and higher level.’’
