St. George’s, Grenada, Monday August 15, 2011 – MOEPRU – Parents of students attending the St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic School are being assured that classes will resume as scheduled on September 5, 2011.

This assurance comes from officials of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, following a fire on Saturday last, which destroyed a portion of the school.

The fire which occurred on Saturday afternoon destroyed the section of the school that accommodated the Pre-School and two (2) Grade six (6) class rooms, and resulted in the loss of furniture, teaching aids and books. Other areas of related damage are being assessed.

“Parents, Guardian and students are given the assurance that the school will re-open as scheduled 5th September 2011 for the new term,” says Acting Permanent Secretary for Education Ms. Eunice Sandy-David. “Arrangements will be made to accommodate the one hundred (100) children directly displaced by the fire” she says.

An emergency meeting is being held with Ministry of Education Officials, the schools management team, the Catholic Board of Management, Parent Teachers Association and other relevant stakeholders, to finalize an Action Plan to deal with the matter.

Education Minister, Sen. Franka Alexis-Bernardine, other Government Ministers and officials of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development visited the scene of the fire on Saturday.

The Police are continuing investigations into the cause of the fire.
