St. George’s, Grenada, August 2, 2011: Inclement weather and ongoing industrial action by LIAT employees have prevented the scheduled return to Grenada of students who represented the country at the just-concluded Windward Islands Secondary Schools’ Games in Dominica.

Grenada emerged champions of the games and the athletes and their coaches were carded to return home on Monday, August 1.

Some athletes have arrived in Barbados where they are being accommodated until arrangements are made for their travel to Grenada.

Those team members, who were unable to leave Dominica because of adverse weather conditions, are back at the athletes’ camp where meals and other necessities are being provided.

“The Ministry of Sports wants parents and the nation to know that we are doing all in our power to ensure that the team arrives in Grenada as soon as possible,’’ said Veda Bruno-Victor, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports.

“We are in constant contact with the athletes, stakeholders of the games and LIAT to ensure the athletes’ safety while they are out there, and for their arrival home at the soonest possible time.’’

The Ministry of Sports, the Permanent Secretary said, is also in contact with Labour Minister, Hon. Glynis Roberts, to figure out what arrangements can be made with LIAT for the Grenada team’s soon return.
