High Commissioner Rouse with Phonics Leaders LONDON, UK, March 23, 2010 - Ten (10) Teachers from Carriacou and Petite Martinique will return to Grenada on Wednesday March 24th, 2010, after participating in the Reading Reform Foundation Conference (RRF), held in London, United Kingdom.

The team of phonics leaders, led by Mrs. Gertrude Niles, Education Officer, commenced the programme in August of 2006. The programme was aimed at improving the literacy skills of the population in Carriacou and Petite Martinique, by training teachers to use synthetic phonics teaching methods.

The project received support from a wide range of individuals and establishments, including the Reading Reform Foundation of the United Kingdom, which campaigns to improve the teaching of reading in the English speaking world.

At the start of the program, the emphasis was based on training teachers and informing education officers and school principals about synthetic phonics. In recent times, the emphasis has been on training and supporting local teachers as they take on their role as phonics leaders.

In speaking to guests at a Reception hosted by the High Commissioner for Grenada, HE Ruth Elizabeth Rouse, on Monday 22nd March, Mrs. Gertrude Niles, on behalf of the team, expressed her gratitude to the RRF for the many years of support and to all those who gave selflessly to the project. The guests also heard from Elizabeth Nonweiler, one of the British Trainers involved in the project, who commended the teachers for their excellent work and their dedication to the Literacy Programme. The team made visits to several schools in the London area engaged in the Literacy Programme.
