ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 10TH, 2010 _ A special Consultation to review the Draft Report of the Grenada National Policy on Sports and Physical Activity was held on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at the National Stadium.

The Consultation, which was attended mainly by senior members of staff in the Department of Sports in the Ministry, re-examined the current Draft Report that was produced in January of this year.

The Consultation paid specific attention to key areas of concerns, as highlighted by interest groups throughout Grenada.  These interest groups were given the opportunity to review and submit feedback on the document on or before March 5.

“We’ll use this feedback to produce a revised policy proposal, which will then go to a national consultation that is scheduled for March 30,” Policy Consultant Leon Charles said as he addressed the media.  “That consultation will look at the revised proposal and make final recommendations for submission to Cabinet.”

Charles, who has been spearheading the development of the Sports Policy since January 2009, believes that Wednesday’s consultation is critical, especially as the Policy seeks to address the importance of sports, which contribute to the social and economical development of the nation.

“It addresses a wide range of issues and therefore, you would expect that all the stakeholders would want to see all their issues adequately addressed,” he said.

Minister of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Hon. Patrick Simmons, who attended the consultation, said the day’s consultation is vital for the development of the Policy. He pointed out that he is very confident and optimistic “that soon we would have a full document to be presented to the Cabinet of Grenada and shortly thereafter, to the Parliament of Grenada so that it could be enacted.”

Minister Simmons added, “This was one of the things that I really, really, really wanted to see implemented. I think it’s the right time.”

This is Grenada’s fourth attempt to develop a National Sports Policy. It is the hope of the Policy Consultant to have the final document developed and submitted no later than the end of April 2010.
