ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, THURSDAY, MARCH 4, 2010_ Grenadian students enrolled in nursing education in Havana, Cuba, have been briefed on the Grenada government’s plans for improving the country’s healthcare system.

The briefing occurred Tuesday at a meeting with Health Minister Sen. Ann Peters and other members of the Grenada delegation which have been visiting Cuba.

More than 15 students are currently pursuing Bachelor’s degree in nursing in the Spanish-speaking country. Another 10 are studying for medical degrees.

Although the student visit was not part of the official itinerary, Sen. Peters and Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Ms. Allison Miller, decided it was necessary to meet with the students.

They were encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity afforded them and strive for excellence. The students were also urged to be of their best behavior and make their families and country proud.

Sen. Peters also highlighted some of the plans and steps already taken to improve healthcare delivery in Grenada, especially at the primary and community-based level.

The Ministry of Health’s initiatives have included the soliciting of funds for training, and securing scholarships and fellowships to enhance the provision of care in specialized areas such as oncology and dialysis.

Chief Nursing Officer in the Ministry of Health, Ms. Nester Edwards, said she is happy that Sen. Peters found time to visit the nursing students, who began their studies in Cuba 2007.
