The Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office (CAIPO) was established under the Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office Act No.19 of 2009 which came into effect on the 15th day of October 2009.

In Grenada, CAIPO is an enhanced revenue earning division of the Ministry of Legal Affairs and the focal point of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) system of organizations responsible for the promotion of Intellectual property rights.

Objective

To ensure all companies, business names and trademarks are registered in accordance with the relevant legislation through the development and maintenance of an automated Registration System. 

Background

The Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office (CAIPO) was established under the Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office Act No. 19 of 2009. The Act was published in the Grenada Government Gazette on August 14, 2009 and came into operation on October 15, 2009

The Act gives responsibility to a Registrar for the administration of CAIPO assisted by a Deputy Registrar and such other officers as are necessary to carry out the Registrar’s functions under the said Act and any other enactment vesting duties and responsibilities in the Registrar including the following:

  1. Companies Act Cap 58A of the Continuous Revised Laws of Grenada, 2010;
  2. Registration of Business Names Act No. 5 of 2012
  3. Trademarks Act No. 1 of 2012
  4. Trademarks Regulations S.R.O. No. 18 of 2012
  5. Registration of United Kingdom Patents Act Cap 283 
  6. Registration of United Kingdom Patents Rules Cap 283
  7. Patent Act No. 16 of 2011

CAIPO is an enhanced revenue earning division of the Ministry of Legal Affairs. It is also the focal point in Grenada of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) which is the specialized body of the United Nations (UN) system of organization responsible for the promotion of Intellectual Property Rights. CAIPO by extension is responsible for protection of Intellectual Property Rights and Starting a Business through ease of registration.

Component of Staff

There are nine (9) members of staff which include a Registrar, Deputy Registrar, Administrative Officer, Patent Officer, Trademark Officer, Companies Officer/Executive Officer, Data Entry Officers (2), Imani (1).
