To enhance and improve Governance and the administration of justice through continuous reform and modernization.
The Ministry of Legal Affairs is the Ministry responsible for providing quality and timely legal advice to Government Ministries and Departments thereby ensuring good and effective governance.
Good governance is imperative for national development. Consequently, the Ministry of Legal Affairs is mandated to ensure that all actions taken by Government and its various Ministries and Department are with in the laws of the land and in conformity with our international obligations.The constitution makes provision for the Attorney General who is the principal legal advisor, a Solicitor General, supported by Senior and Crown Counsel.
The Attorney General’s Chambers is also responsible for reviewing all agreements, deeds, leases, treaties, conventions, etc to which the Government is a party. The office also provides legal opinions and advice to all departments of Government on Legal issues regarding their functions and provides representation in civil proceedings brought by and against Government. The office of legislative drafter also falls with in the purview of the Attorney General. This office is responsible for ensuring that all laws are drafted and sent to Cabinet for its approval before proceeding to Parliament for enactment.
