PHILOSOPHY A Primary Health Care approach using Health Promotion strategies.
The Ministry of Health is divided into three programmed functional areas;
ADMINISTRATION: The top level where policies formulated and implemented and financial matters, personnel, and the general steering of the entire Ministry is coordinated. There you will find the following, (General Administration) Clerical/Support services, Personnel, Registry, Procurement unit, Finance, Transportation, Communications/ Public Relations, Health Promotion, Environmental Health, Environmental Protection, Planning (Projects/Programs), Epidemiology/Health Information, Medical/Nursing Administration, Registry (Births/ Deaths/ Marriages).
HOSPITALS: The General Hospital located at Grand Etang Road in St. George’s is the headquarters overseeing the operations of Princess Alice Hospital in St. Andrew’s and Princess Royal Hospital in Carriacou as well as the Mt. Gay Psychiatric Hospital -100 beds and Richmond Home-100 beds. Hospitals provides support to all of the health centers and medical stations in the country and offers a wide ranges of services, including, ambulance, laboratory, maternal, radiology, genecology, eye care and testing, dental and theater to name a few.
The General Hospital has some of 230 beds, and offers a wide variety of in patient and out patient medical services. If you are considering visiting any of our hospitals there are a few things to consider, such as the adherence of a visitors dress code, complete security checks & screening, a standard visiting-time policy, a non smoking policy and a zero tolerance use of cellular phones on the wards.
At the General Hospital there is a private ward of air conditioned rooms. These rooms are furnished with bathrooms, cable-television sets and telephone and the best part is they are more than reasonably priced.
All fees for surgery or other procedures performed are payable ONLY at the hospital’s finance department and an official government receipt obtained. If you visit any of our three hospitals on the island you will be sure to find a caring and dedicated team of highly trained healthcare providers, committed in ensuring your recover from illness.

At the General Hospital we treat most medical conditions including:
* Motor vehicular injuries * Burns * Severe bleeding * Overdose
* Asthmatic reactions * Severe chest pain *Falls or blows to the head-(Trauma)
* Near drowning * Wounds * Ingestion of Toxic substances
* Excessive vomiting & diarrhea in adults & children
* High fever especially in children * Severe abdominal pain,……..Etc
When should you access the Accident & Emergency (Casualty) Dept at the Hospital?
You should access the Accident & Emergency Department of the hospital only when you have a LIFE threatening accident/incident or emergency.
Community Services: this area is considered very important in the Government and Ministry’s continued mission to encourage persons to utilized the services provided at the community level. It takes the very friendly name “Community Health”. Community Services is regarded as important since it do not only take into account medical services but general environmental health public health, environmental protection to an extent, dental, pharmacy community nursing community mental health, district medical services and health promotion.
Under the Community Services approach you will find all of the government controlled and operated health facilities Six (6) district health centers and twenty nine (30) medical stations spread throughout the country within a three (3) mile radial proximity.
Environmental Affairs Department
Environment Health/Vector control Div: The E.H.D is responsible for monitoring & ensuring the best Environmental Health practices are adhered to at all times. It consists of seventeen officers who supervise the various districts and monitor the island’s Seaports and Airports. The E.H.D also has a Vector Control Unit, which periodically monitors, investigates and terminates vectors, that threatens human wellbeing. As part of their responsibilities the E.H.D ensures the health and safety of the public remains its number one priority. Officers within the E.H.D can be reached by dialing 440-2649 & asking for their respective extensions. The office opens from 8:00am - 4:00pm Monday - Friday.
The department consists of 16 environmental health officers EHO’s and about 100 vector control officers, with offices in every parish on the island including Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
Most of the (EHO’s) from time to time undergo many different training in areas of food safety, food borne diseases investigation, mass surveillance, etc.
Environmental Protection (The Environment): Because the protection of the Environment and other environmental related issues such as climate change and global warming is perhaps the number one issue in the world today it is safe to say that such department plays a fundamental role in the health status of every country. The Ministry of Health has always supported and will continue to promote the protection of the environment which is not only fragile but living.
Hence the reason why such department despite being small in office space has a very broad mandate and like its co department environmental health(public health) it have its say in the water quality, waste management, control/management of hazardous waste, formulating guidelines, regulations, legislations and other policies in relation to the environment.
The department’s goal is to protect and preserve the natural resources through a National Environmental Management Strategy, with a vision of an effective, efficient and sustainable management of our natural resources in the state of Grenada.
Purpose of the Environmental Affairs Department
Facilitating an improvement in the Institutional framework for Environmental Management and Sustainable Development in the state of Grenada.
Role and Function
- The primary role and function of this department are the duties of the Environmental Protection Officer (EPO). They include:
- To advise on environmental matters, including natural resource management and sustainable development;
- To co-ordinate the activities of the Environmental Coordinating Committee (ECC) including convening, preparing and following up on the committee meetings;
- To liaise with all agencies and departments involved in environmental activities and prepare and present summary reports on such activities to the ECC;
- To liaise with regional and international environmental agencies in collaboration with other ministries and departments;
- To source and disseminate relevant information from regional and international agencies and government departments;
- To be the executive secretary to the ECC; and
Any other related duties.

Institutional Infrastructure
EPO reports to the Permanent Secretary, of the Ministry. EPO works closely with the Environmental Health department on a number of issues even though there in not a formal arrangement between the two departments. Moreover, within the context of Principles 19 and 20 of the St. George’s Declaration of Principles for Environmental Sustainability in the OECS, the EAD has a reporting responsibility to the OECS-Environment and Sustainable Development Unit (ESDU) on the activities of national stakeholders engaging in environmental management and sustainable development agenda.

Ecclesiastic Relations: Because Grenada is a Christian country and its citizens are God fearing the department of Ecclesiastic Relations exists, to promote and assist in the teaching of the Devine creator, and the Minister with responsibility for this department from time to time interacts and meet with religious leaders from all denominations and assist in whatever way she can
Services offered: Cognizant of the fact that the greatest resource of a country is its people and that a healthy nation is a wealthy nation. The Ministry of Health has committed itself to providing a wide range of services that are equitable, accessible, affordable, appropriate and timely to meet the needs of the population.
