Ambassador Dr. Spencer Thomas - Statement to the UN Ocean conference

ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, June 7, 2017 – GIS: Grenada’s Statement delivered by H.E. Dr. Spencer Thomas, Ambassador for Multilateral Environmental Agreements of Grenada. at the United Nations Ocean Conference, Partnership Dialogue 2 - Managing, protecting, conserving and restoring marine and coastal ecosystems.

During the United Nations Ocean Conference in New York, happening June 5 to 9th, Dr. Spencer Thomas, Ambassador for Multilateral Environmental Agreements of Grenada, delivered Grenada’s national statement for the partnership dialogue on managing, protecting, conserving and restoring marine and coastal ecosystems.

Dr. Thomas highlighted that “without ocean health, there is no ocean wealth” and that development can be de-coupled from environmental degradation.

He remarked that Grenada has embarked on a series of measures which seek to safe-guard and enhance the ocean ecosystem for current and future generations.

These measures include bottom up and top down approaches, grounded in the socio-economic realities of Grenada, a leading role for private sector and civil society groups and openness for innovative partnerships on the international level.

Specific examples cited were the Pure Grenada tourism brand, the underwater sculpture park, the coral rehabilitation park, mangrove restoration, the Blue Innovation Institute and the Caribbean Challenge Initiative.
