MAREP, Closing Ceremony for Agricultural Training for Ministry of Agriculture Extension Officer

The Market Access and Rural Enterprise Development Programme (MAREP) continues its initiative to train the various district Extension Officers attached to the Ministry of Agriculture.

The objective is to refresh the knowledge and skills of the staff to ensure that they are equipped to improve sustainable agriculture through technical support offerings to MAREP beneficiaries and in turn other farmers in Grenada – site visits and assessments for successful development of projects.

The beneficiaries include individual farmers and producer groups engaged in the following activities: Crop Farming, Fishing, Livestock – pig and small ruminants, Poultry, Bee Keeping and Irrigation.

The final training session for the quarter occurred on Wednesday 16th September, 2015 at the National Stadium.

The topic covered was Irrigation-Water Quality Management with subtopics such as (1) Water Supply for a Secure and Economically Viable Agriculture, (2) Water Quality, (3) Chemical Analysis of Irrigated Water, and (4) Different types of Irrigation Systems – Furrow, “Fregat”, and Travelling Gun.


The participants at the closing ceremony heard remarks and admonition from the following speakers: (i) Hon. Roland Bhola, - Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Forestry, Fisheries, & Environment, (ii) Mr. Byron Campbell – Programme Manager of MAREP, (iii) Mr. Randolph Shears – Chief Extension Officer and (iv) Mr. Kelly Patrick – Extension Coordinator. Extension Officers were encouraged to appreciate the trainings given and to adopt the new strategies.
