ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, October 1, 2015 – GIS: Grenada joins the United Nations in the observance of International Day of Older Persons on October 1, 2015. Grenada also observes October as the MONTH OF THE ELDERLY.

The Theme for this year’s observance is “Sustainability and Age Inclusiveness in the Urban Environment”.

The Desk for the Elderly has been making plans to commemorate this period. Several events have been planned, including visits to Geriatric Homes and elderly persons within various communities in each parish, media appearances, and activities by schools.

Ageing brings about both opportunities and challenges.

Some of the Opportunities include the continued contribution of older persons to local and national life, the transference of knowledge and skills from one generation to the next. Challenges include: loneliness, Depression, frustration, anxiety, and exclusion from groups etc.

As we recognize our Nation’s Senior Citizens’ achievements, and contributions to Society, we urge all Grenadians throughout the island to take time during the Month of October to recognize the contributions of our Senior Citizens.

They are our most precious resource and we need to value them now and always.
