ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, May 5, 2015 – GIS: The Grenada Government says it’s preparing a guidance note on salary negotiations for submission to state bodies as part of a plan to boost their efficiency.

The note is part of a package of new terms state bodies will have to operate under as Government moves to provide stronger oversight.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Finance Timothy Antoine says state bodies need to improve their operations, consistent with government’s push to put its fiscal house in order.

The process will also aid to prevent pension complications in the future relating to payments.

“What we are now in the process of doing is preparing a formal guidance note on salary negotiation, the concern of the government is that if you do not fully plan and make preparation for your pension liability, the day will come when workers go home and pension cannot be paid,” Permanent Secretary Antoine said.

“When that cannot be done somebody is going to come knocking on the door of the government either the union, workers or the statutory body saying “help”, now we can’t be fixing the central government, putting our fiscal house in order and ignore the children”.

Other new terms announced by Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell during a meeting last month with state bodies include the preparation of business plans and ways of funding pension liability.

Last month, Prime Minister Mitchell met all statutory bodies and informed them of government’s expectations.

“When the Prime Minister spoke in the 2015 budget he spoke about strong oversight of statutory bodies and that’s precisely what we’re doing,” said Antoine.
