ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, SUNDAY, MAY 3, 2015 - GIS: The Keith Mitchell Administration is continuing to explore all leads and avenues to rebuild the Gouyave Health Centre.

Government officials representing the Ministries of Health, Works and Finance have been meeting with representatives of the European Union (EU) recently to discuss funding for the project.

Earlier this week, bureaucrats from the (EU), were accompanied to the original site of the Gouyave Health Centre, by senior officers the Ministries of Health and Works.

During the site visit the (EU) officials had raised questions about the access points, entry, exit and an environmental impact assessment.

The team had also met with some members of the medical staff at the Gouyave Health Centre at its present location to be apprised of the user access to health services.

On Tuesday Health and (EU) officials met at the Ministry of Health where the project was further discussed. The project will be reviewed on May 8, this year before it is submitted to the (EU) office for final approval.

Background:

Prior to July 2008, former Health Minister - Mrs. Ann David-Antoine and her team had started the process to rebuild the Health Centre.

During that period Government was able to source and secure technical and financial support for the commencement of the project that was to be undertaken in phases.

A Cuban engineering team together with officers from the Ministry of Works, tasked to work on the project, after a few site visits undertook the preparation (drawing) of the plans and preparation of an artistic impression of the project.

However after assuming office in July 2008, the Tillman Thomas Government in January 2009 said it was reviewing the project and subsequently proceeded to tear down the building.

Notwithstanding the importance of time the project’s secured financing was recalled after Government had failed to utilize the funds. Nearly two years later an official plan was presented for the building, without any financing.

Presently, the Ministry of Health under the new direction of Minister Nickolas Steele, is aggressively taking steps to revive the project and keep the hope of a new Health Centre for the people of St. John a reality.
