ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, MARCH 23, 2015 – GIS: The National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) will be one of several countries in the region participating in Exercise CARIBE Wave Lantex 2015, the annual Tsunami Evacuation Exercise, scheduled for Wednesday, March 25th, 2015.

The one-day activity which incorporates countries of the Caribbean and the Northwestern Atlantic is being used to test the region’s preparedness to effectively respond to Tsunamis, and also to raise the level of awareness about Tsunamis among the population.

The 2015 exercise scenario outlines that Grenada will be in the path of a Tsunami that will be generated when an earthquake occurs in the area close to panama.

The scenario goes on to state that Grenada will be affected on the Western side of the country from Gouyave, St. John’s, to Point Salines in the South. Schools, fuel companies, hotels and other entities will participate in this very important exercise. Some will test evacuation procedures, while others will test Communication.

Fast, decisive and appropriate actions are the keys to effectively respond to Tsunamis.

The words feel, hear, see and run are most important. You may feel a strong shaking around you, hear a strange roar from the sea, or see the sea water withdraw an unusual distance; these are signs of an approaching Tsunami. You will then need to run or evacuate as fast as you can to higher ground.

NaDMA continues its efforts to sensitize the general population on the hazards that can impact Grenada. The Agency wishes to emphasize and remind the general public that a Tsunami Evacuation Exercise will be conducted on Wednesday, March 25th, 2015.
