ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, July 22, 2015- GIS: The Grenada Government says it is making significant strides in securing more scholarships for nationals.

Senator Simon Stiell, Minister of State responsible for Human Resource Development says it is critical that the areas of study pursued are in line with the national development strategy .

Senator Stiell says the national strategic plan for 2015 -2030 gives government the opportunity to not only think ahead, but think outside box, where scholarships and training are concerned.

He said while the current priority areas of health care, agriculture, education and tourism are important, other critical areas, like energy, must be considered.

“The whole issue of renewable energy is a major national development concern, especially when we look at the liberalization of the energy sector... Whether it is further enhancing business management in the public or private sector… these are some of the areas that we need to be looking at,” Senator Stiell told the media at Tuesday’s Post Cabinet Briefing.

Senator Stiell said that in addition to the personal development of scholarship recipients, government must also focus on how the students, upon completion of their courses, can better serve the country.

“Hundreds of students are awarded scholarships each year and, yes, their personal development is key and essential, but we also need to look at their contribution to national service.”

Government is currently drafting a new bonding policy that is expected to regularize the years and type of service required of returning graduates, in the best interest of the nation and the individuals themselves.

“We are taking another look at our bonding policy so that when students return to Grenada, we are able to apply skills and knowledge for national benefit,” Senator Stiell said.
