Prime Minister Mitchell to attend 36th regular meeting of CARICOM in Barbados

ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, JULY 1, 2015 – GIS: Prime Minister Dr. the Right Honourable Keith Mitchell is leaving Grenada on Thursday July 2nd to attend the Thirty-Sixth Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community in Barbados.

An official Opening Ceremony will be held at the Hilton Barbados Resort on Thursday, commencing at 4:30 p.m., during which addresses will be delivered by the Outgoing and Incoming Chairpersons of the Conference, as well as the Secretary-General and the newly elected and re-elected Heads of Government of the region.

Grenada’s Prime Minister is expected to speak on several key topics under his areas of responsibility at the Plenary and Caucus sessions which follow on July 3rd and 4th.

Among those will be“STRENGTHENING AND UTILISING SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE REGION: REPORT OF THE CARICOM SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY MEETING in Grenada on March 26th-28th.

Other general issues on the agenda include the Community’s position on border disputes such as that between Guyana and Venezuela; and the much discussed issue of the Community’s engagement with the Dominican Republic, especially in light of that country’s decision to deport Dominicans of Haitian descent to Haiti.

Prime Minister Mitchell will be accompanied to the 36th CARICOM Meeting by Grenada’s Ambassador to CARICOM, Dr. Patrick Antoine, and Foreign Service Officer, Mr. Alva Browne.

Following the Meeting in Barbados, Prime Minister travels to New York then Canada for a series of Diaspora and International engagements, before returning to Grenada on July 13th.

In the absence of Dr. Keith Mitchell, Deputy Prime Minister Honourable Elvin Nimrod will be the Acting Prime Minister.
