Grenada Government promises to assist media workers

ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, January 16, 2014 – GIS:  The Grenada government has promised to assist aspiring journalists by providing them with training opportunities.

Information Minister Senator Winston Garraway made the announcement during the 2014 Media Awards ceremony at the Trade Centre.

 The Senator was responding to a request for support by the President of The Media Workers Association of Grenada Ms. Sherry-Ann Noel.

“I beg of the Honorable Senator responsible for Information to keep the media in mind and the development of the profession by communicating to the Honorable Prime Minister to afford members of the profession the opportunity to better their skills for the field by offering scholarships to CARIMAC UWI”, said Sherry-Ann Noel.

The Information Minister responded positively to the plea and called on media managers to also give adequate assistance to young media workers.

“But we have to see and we’re ought to see the development of our young practitioners, we would give them the opportunity and we must give them the time,” the Information Minister said.

“I employ on media managers to give the opportunities and to give support to young practitioners so that they can develop”.

The Information Minister went on to say that Government is aware of the critical role of the media in national development and will do all in its power to help our media workers.

“We will play our part as the Government, we will do all we can to ensure that you get the opportunity to develop yourselves” said Senator Garraway.

The MWAG President says she is very anxious to see Journalist armed with the necessary tools to carry out their duties effectively because of the pivotal role the mass media plays in the development of the nation.

Ten media workers in Grenada benefitted from training in China late last year with support from the Embassy in St.George’s.
