ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, January 11, 2015 – GIS: It has come to the attention of the Ministry of Social Development and Housing that Ms. Iesha Mason has been making certain aspersions against the Ministry and we wish to set the record straight.

First of all, the Ministry is not in the habit of making public statements on its clients, but it has become necessary to correct the mis-information that is being broadcasted on several media organizations which is tarnishing the image of the Ministry.

Ms. Iesha Mason and her family have been provided with services by the Division of Social Services of the Ministry for well over twenty years. Her mother with whom she lived was provided with housing and when that house was destroyed by fire another one was constructed and assistance given in accommodating the family.

Iesha was accommodated at child care homes and was assisted in attending school etc. Following the birth of her baby, care and assistance was also provided. In August of 2014 she chose to run away from the institution where she was accommodated and cared for along with her baby. She was found roaming the streets with the infant and that is when the baby was placed in care.

The Ministry was prepared to work with Iesha, through the provision of parenting skills and other support but Iesha has not been cooperative. She never expressed an interest in having contact with her baby until January 6, 2015 when arrangements were made and she had her first visit with her baby.

The Ministry and other interested parties have gone out of their way to assist Iesha on several occasions. It would be appropriate to obtain the facts before airing stories that can have such a negative impact on the ministry and its clients.

Submitted for your information and kind attention.
