ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, February 19, 2015 – GIS: Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell is reporting major gains in correcting fiscal problems, rising investor confidence and an historic pact with social partners among achievements of his two year old government.

The Prime Minister says his administration has rekindled growth in the local economy after inheriting a state of chaos following the General elections two years ago.

The Government then owed regional and international institutions and was selling assets to pay the salaries of public officers and unpaid claims were hitting the roof.

The Grenadian leader says the country’s fiscal house is now in order and a home grown structural adjustment programme has been receiving high praise from the IMF as well as other international institutions.

In just two years, the Keith Mitchell administration succeeded in plunging the deficit from 18 million to 9 million dollars while slashing unpaid claims from 106 million down to 66 million dollars.

In the same period the country has also seen record growth in tourist arrivals and a dent in unemployment.

The Prime Minister believes a significant achievement has been the role of the social partners and the creation of a social pact.

On its second anniversary in government, the Mitchell administration admits that, despite the gains, it still has a lot of work to do.

Prime Minister Mitchell says now that some of the fiscal problems have been corrected and with growth returning to the economy.. Investor interest is peaking once more.

A tablet in school programme, housing, youth employment, as well as increase funding on social programmes and youth entrepreneurship are among areas targeted for focus in the New Year.
