The Market Access and Rural Enterprise Development Programme (MAREP)
hosted a two day Youth in Agriculture Campaign (YIAC) Workshop at the Grenada National Stadium, St. George on Tuesday October 28th and Wednesday October 29th, 2014.

The main objective of the Youth in Agriculture Campaign was to encourage farmers and empower youths to become interested in agriculture. The campaign also sort to contribute to poverty reduction and food security in MAREP’s 50 targeted rural communities across Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The campaign brought over one hundred (100) participants (potential and existing farmers) from the rural communities’ island wide. In addition, it recognised several specialists from various organisations and related government ministries namely: Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries; Ministry of Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs; the Marketing and National Importing Board and Grenada Industrial Development Corporation who were facilitators of the workshop.

The workshop included presentations from various presenters, case studies and visitations linking to a range of agricultural contributions, challenges and opportunities, as summarized:

- Day one: the presenters spoke on topics such as: The Zero Hunger Challenge Initiative; Issues facing people in agriculture - Getting Youth involved; Sustainable Agriculture; Technology and Renewable Energy; Climate Change and its Impact on Farming and Permaculture and Farming Innovations.

- Day two: the sessions addressed resilience in agriculture from different angles as participants visited various farmlands across the parishes to explore opportunities and think through best practices, and changes that can be impacted to their respective farmlands.

The Campaign documented a take-away message “agriculture is more than an idea; it is a commitment that farmers and communities must make to ensure agriculture become sustainable”.

MAREP is therefore proud to have launched the Youth in Agriculture Campaign, as part of the programme’s commitment to increase the level of empowerment in rural communities and ensure that young rural men and women become motivated and interested in agriculture. This is in turn, will translate to development and employment opportunities, agricultural successes, increased agricultural production and sustainable livelihoods for farmers.
