Dover Government wins Reading Competition

Beausejour, Carriacou, November 4, 2014- Primary schools in Carriacou and Petite Martinique are seeing a marked improvement in students’ performance in Language Arts.

That’s according to Area Education Officer Rosalina Patrice-Lendore. Lendore who was speaking at the 4th annual Michelle Coy Reading Competition attributes this to the students’ participation in the competition and the work of the teachers.

This year’s competition which was held at the Hillsborough Government School was won by Perez McGillivary of Dover Government School.

McGillivary, a Grade 6 student was adjudged the best reader from a field of six (6) participants who came from the primary schools in Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

2nd place went to Avernell Andrew of Mt. Pleasant Government School and 3rd Hillsborough Government School student. Omnisi McNeil.

The other participants were Ranika Bubb- Harvey Vale Government, Romeo Charles- Petite Martinique RC and Rachelene Bethel- L’Esterre Rosary School.

The competition sponsored by the Brooklyn based Mt. Pleasant and Grand-Bay USA is held in honour of the late Literacy Coordinator Michelle Coy.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs Bernadette Lendore-Sylvester commended the organization for the active role they are playing in the development of education in the twin-isle parish.
The participants all received electronic gadgets such as tablets and a Samsung Tab S4 which were loaded with reading materials to encourage them to continue reading.
